One of the aims of Accomplish Press is to establish, nurture and promote a strong reading culture among young people.
The news headlines and social studies are full of news about the decline in literacy and communication skills in young people. This shows that young people are not reading as much as they should. Television, movies, video games, and other types of entertainment are competing for attention and reading seems to be losing the battle. As lovers of books, we know that reading is an excellent activity for young (and not so young) minds to engage in. The benefits of reading good books cannot be over-emphasized:
- Reading makes you smarter
- Reading is relaxing
- Reading engages the mind and stimulates the imagination
- Reading boosts analytical thinking
- Reading improves vocabulary and spelling
- Reading improves concentration
- Reading boosts creativity
- Reading helps to improve writing skills
- Reading boosts memory retention
- Reading a wide variety helps to broaden the mind
To encourage more people to read, we are launching a campaign to get more free books (and e-books) into schools and local libraries, into unconventional places like hair salons, tube and train stations, and any place where people are generally sitting around waiting. People would be encouraged to read a good book if it was offered to them for free or at a very low cost. And if young people pick up the reading habit early on, they will acquire a set of skills that will serve them well for the rest of their lives.
”No matter how busy you may think you are, you must find time for reading, or surrender yourself to self-chosen ignorance.”- Confucius
